Elocution is a now old-fashioned term which was often associated with acquiring what was considered a more ‘refined’ manner of speech. In other words

, social associations. These days, it’s a little different. I am a London-based voice coach who teaches what is these days called Accent Reduction. This process generally offers participants - usually non-native speakers of English - more choice in the way they speak, reducing the influence of the first language on their English pronunciation. In other words, regional associations for the practical purpose of greater intelligibility. For example, many people find it tricky to distinguish the vowels in send and sand, so it’s my job to demonstrate and coach the difference. Both vowels involve smiling, the ‘a’ in sand needs a much more vertically open mouth than the ‘e’ in send, in most British accents, at least. In a lesson, clients first learn the new mouth positions, then practise them in different situations until they become habitual.

Some people might ask whether such vowel differences might matter very much. Context usually helps us out, after all; we obviously aren’t going to ‘sand’ an email. Nevertheless, context is sometimes an unreliable aide: tax can be heard as as techs, banned as bend, track as trek. It’s understandable that people want to minimise the likelihood of such misunderstandings, which could be amusing at best, irritating at worst, but potentially time-wasting in any case.

Moreover, it isn’t always about simply being understood. I have many clients who speak English very clearly, are understood by everyone around, but experience a ‘curiosity’ about their accent from other people, with the question ‘Where are you from?’ frequently popping up after only a few sentences. While some people are happy to explain the origins of their accent, this could get tedious if it comes up in almost every conversation. They want to get their message across to others without their accent standing in the way, which is of course a very personal viewpoint and differs for everyone. I work with those who want the ability to ‘blend in’ at will, which might involve the aim of acquiring a fully British accent, or as close to one as possible.

Our existing pronunciation habits don't just go away. I'd argue we wouldn't want them to; it may serve us well to use certain speech habits in certain situations. Accent Reduction - or Accent Acquisition, as I would love to call it - equips clients with a tool, a new accent which they can switch on at will. Previous habits will still be accessible if desired!
Every person who speaks has an accent and we all have the right to speak exactly how we choose. For those who want to widen the possibilities of what they can choose, contact me to find out more about accent reduction and spoken voice training in general.

Clear Spoken English are a specialist voice coach London offering accent reduction and accent training throughout London.
